What face shapes are there?

Finding the perfect pair of sunglasses that both reflect your personality and complement your face shape isn’t as hard as it may seem! While each person has a face as unique as they are, there are several traditional shapes that we can use to classify what kind of face you have, and therefore what kind of sunglasses would best fit you! Some of these face shapes are oval, square, round, diamond, triangle, and heart. Each of these shapes are beautiful and knowing what accessories complement each face shape can help in all the daily style choices you might make.

Determining your face shape

While you may not yet know right off the bat what face shape you have, figuring this out can be as easy as taking a peek in the mirror! Many people can discover their face shape just by “eyeballing” it, but if you want to get particular, you can grab out a tape measure. We’ll be primarily looking at the cheekbones, jawline, and forehead.

First, focus on your cheekbones. Because cheekbones are located in the middle area of the face, they play a big role in face shape! Make a mental note (or take a measurement!) of your cheekbones and if they appear to be the widest part of the face, or if they are in line with the jaw and forehead. Also notice if they are higher or if they are a more pronounced feature of your face.

Next take a look at that jawline. Does it have a more angular look, with sharper lines, or is it smoother and rounded off? Make a note of if your jawline is wider or narrower in comparison to the rest of your face. Finally, notice your forehead and whether it appears to be wide or narrow, tall or short. As we go into details of which face shape you might have and some possible sunglass options, just remember that its all about balance when trying to find your perfect pair of sunglasses!

Sunglasses for Oval Face shapes

You can be sure you have an oval face shape if your cheekbones are slightly wider and higher and if your jawline is narrower. If you have an oval face shape, congratulations! Oval face shapes are considered the most universal and can pull off virtually any style of sunglasses! Wider sunglass frames that are a bit oversized work great! Since this is the most flexible of the face shapes, going for something a bit more bold and fun is recommended!

Sunglasses for Square Face shapes

If you suspect you have a square face shape, then you most likely have beautiful bold and angular features. A wider jawline with matching wide cheekbones is a telltale for this face shape! To help soften the sharper features of a square face shape, choose rounded sunglasses with a thinner rim! This will complement the facial features while providing enough contrast to bring out some personality!

Sunglasses for Round Face shapes

If you have a round face, the jaw, cheekbones, and forehead will all be similar in width to each other. Round faces also are known for their soft curvature. In order to best complement these features, lean more towards sunglasses with angles! This can be a pair of square or rectangular sunglasses that have bolder lines to bring balance to the face.

Sunglasses for Diamond Face shapes

A diamond shaped face is going to have a narrower forehead, wider cheekbones, and an angular jawline. Diamond face shapes are actually the rarest of the face shapes out there! To best complement your unique features, choose sunglasses with an oval shape and with either no rim, or a slightly more top-heavy rim to balance out those beautiful cheekbones! Don’t be afraid to play around with the color and style to shake things up a bit!

Sunglasses for Triangle Face shapes

If you have determined that you have a wider jawline with a narrow forehead, you might have a triangle face shape! These faces can rock a pair of sunglasses that have wider frames as to bring more width to the upper half of the face. Another option could be sunglasses that are bolder on the top and lighter on the bottom to aid in creating balance to the face! Sunglasses like aviators could be just what you are looking for!

Sunglasses for Heart Face shapes

A heart shaped face will have a wider forehead but narrower jaw and chin, often with high cheekbones as well. This face shape is extremely versatile and can pull off a lot of different looks. Opting for sunglasses with winged frames or even rounder sunglasses with a thin frame could do just the trick! If you have a heart shaped face, take advantage and try some bold new styles just to have a little fun!
